Regrouping using Base 10 Blocks

This video was created using Educreations to help students understand why regrouping in the standard algorithm works.

  • The video uses base 10 blocks to visually explain why you are regrouping numbers in the standard addition algorithm.
  • This video could be used in several ways, but mainly to have a correct, reliable explanation in your absence. This could be used in case of a substitute teacher, or to put online to show parents as they are trying to help their student with math. It can show parents how it is being taught in the classroom so that they can feel confident as they use similar language and strategies.
Standards this covers:

3rd Grade Mathematics, Domain: Number and operations in base 10, use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic number 2:
  • Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Educational Technology Standard 6:
  • Use telecommunications efficiently and effectively to access remote information and communicate with others in support of direct and independent learning and for pursuit of personal interests.
