Frog-Copter

Frog-Copter was created using Storybird as an assessment tool.
  • This story has obvious settings, characters, and major events. Students will read the story, then tell you about the setting, characters, and plot line. This will allow you to assess if they understand what each is.
  • This could also be used as a teaching tool instead of as an assessment. The class could read the story together, or in small groups, and answer the same questions to practice.
Standards this covers:

1st Grade Reading: Literature Standard 3:
  •  Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.
Educational Technology Standard 6:
  • Use telecommunications efficiently and effectively to access remote information and communicate with others in support of direct and independent learning and for pursuit of personal interests.

Opinion Piece

This worksheet can be used to help students learn to write an opinion piece.
  • It gives an outline for giving an introduction, an opinion with reasons for their opinions, and closing the paper.
  • As a class you will first need to read Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes, then use the worksheet as a guide to write a draft of the paper which could be assigned afterward.
  • This should not be used as an introduction. Students will need to be familiar with the writing process.
Standards this covers:

1st Grade English Language Arts, Writing Standard 1:
  • Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure."
Educational Technology Standard 5:
  • Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.
