The Three Branches of Government

This mind map was created using Popplet.

  • This is an example of a completed mind map, but the idea behind this activity is to start from scratch and recreate this popplet as a class as a way to review the material students have learned.
  • Students could also create a poplet on their own as a form of evaluation.
 Standards this covers:
5th Grade Social Studies, Standard 3, Objective 1c:
  • Distinguish between the role of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the government.
Educational Technology Standard 5:
  • Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.

Regrouping using Base 10 Blocks

This video was created using Educreations to help students understand why regrouping in the standard algorithm works.
  • The video uses base 10 blocks to visually explain why you are regrouping numbers in the standard addition algorithm.
  • This video could be used in several ways, but mainly to have a correct, reliable explanation in your absence. This could be used in case of a substitute teacher, or to put online to show parents as they are trying to help their student with math. It can show parents how it is being taught in the classroom so that they can feel confident as they use similar language and strategies.
Standards this covers:

3rd Grade Mathematics, Domain: Number and operations in base 10, use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic number 2:
  • Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Educational Technology Standard 6:
  • Use telecommunications efficiently and effectively to access remote information and communicate with others in support of direct and independent learning and for pursuit of personal interests.

Pinterest

This Classroom DIY board was created on Pinterest.
  • It has so many fun, money saving DIY projects!
  • It is being added to continually as I find more projects.
  • Many of my favorite projects come from Frogs in First, so be sure to hop on over and check it out!
  • I also love Pinterest for gathering ideas for lesson plans, I have boards for several different subjects that I continually add to as I find new fun and creative ideas. It is such a great resource!
Standards this covers:

Educational Technology Standard 7:
  • Use telecommunications and on-line resources (e.g., email, online discussions, web environments) to participate in collaborative problem-solving activities to develop solutions or products for audiences inside and outside the classroom

Frog-Copter

Frog-Copter was created using Storybird as an assessment tool.
  • This story has obvious settings, characters, and major events. Students will read the story, then tell you about the setting, characters, and plot line. This will allow you to assess if they understand what each is.
  • This could also be used as a teaching tool instead of as an assessment. The class could read the story together, or in small groups, and answer the same questions to practice.
Standards this covers:

1st Grade Reading: Literature Standard 3:
  •  Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.
Educational Technology Standard 6:
  • Use telecommunications efficiently and effectively to access remote information and communicate with others in support of direct and independent learning and for pursuit of personal interests.
